A cup of TEA - Diary in memory of the forest.
Research: #4 - Real Value
Date: 26. January 2008.

Last week I told how the forest is important, this week I will tell you how to take part in saving the rain forest. We need to stop cutting it down, and save it. The rain forest is used in two stages, first the timber from the forest is cut down and sold. Then they burn the area where the forest has been, and start growing grassland for meat-production (it may be the hamburgers you get eat from time to time.) or growing petrol. PETROL created from plant-oil is not environmental friendly, if it is produced where there was rain forest. Also producing petrol from plants push the price on food up, so poor people gets higher prices. Petrol from plant production has to come from waist products of food production and not as something that push food production away. A National Geographical magazine from 2007 had a feature about this topic that is great reading if you want to know more.

When getting furniture, look after products that not is from rain forest trees. The trees that is cut in the tropical rain forest is: mahogany, teak, sapele, meranti and other. What ever the shop say, tropical / rain forest do come from the rain forest. Also the "environmental friendly" trees.

But there is one problem we also need to think about when we are going to have the rain forest, and that is finding other types of jobs to the people who is working with it. And there is a lot of ways we can use that people to take care of the forest, and help to rebuild the rain forest.

If you want to learn more you can follow this link to The Rainforest foundation. Here you can also help in different ways.
